Mysuru’s Air Connectivity Has Strengthened

Mysuru’s Mandakalli Airport, catering to the domestic needs of the city now connects a few major cities in India. The airport in Mysore is one of the oldest airstrips in the country. Major airlines such as Kingfisher (Oct 2010 to Nov 2011), SpiceJet, and TruJet operate daily nonstop flights at the airport. At present, the Mysore airport, spread across 490 acres, has a single runway with only one terminal.

Mandakalli airport, initially, operated a lone daily flight to Chennai but it is now connected to 6 more major cities. The additional flights being operated from Mysore Airport are:

  • Mysuru - Bengaluru
  • Mysuru - Belagavi
  • Mysuru - Goa
  • Mysuru - Kochi
  • Mysuru - Hyderabad
  • Mysuru - Mangaluru

The Mysore airport is currently equipped with 3 parking stands and offers good parking facilities to the passengers.

The new flight connectivities will boost the economic growth as well as largely help the city’s tourist front. As the travel needs of the people are taken care of, Mysore’s commercial & industrial growth is nowhere going to stop. As new industries are benign set up in the city, Mysore is going to be a resourceful house for major manufacturing, IT, retail, and many other sectors.

As for the future of Mandakalli airport, the plans for expansion are in full swing. The runway is planned for an expansion from 5700 ft to 7900 ft and 45 m in width. The expansion requires 240 acres of additional land to be acquired out of which 114 acres of land have been acquired already. The government also plans to turn the domestic airport into an international airport once the expansion of the runway is complete.
